What is Online safety?

Online safety can also be called ‘internet safety’ or ‘e-safety’.

Online safety is often described as the safe and responsible use of technology. This includes the use of the internet and also other means of communication such as messaging, gaming, email and social media.

Always be careful when you are communicating online. It can help you to keep in touch with your friends and help your education, but if used incorrectly, it can also cause harm – to you and to others.

Tips for staying safe online:

1. Talk About Online Safety

• Never share personal information (like name, address, school, or phone number) without permission from a parent or guardian.
• People online might not always be who they say they are.

2. Set Rules for Screen Time

• Limit how long you are online for and when. For example, no devices at bedtime or during family meals.
• Take time for other activities like playing outside, reading, or hobbies.

3. Use Child-Friendly Platforms

• Stick to websites and apps designed for kids. These often have stronger safety and privacy measures.
• Use kid-safe search engines that filter out inappropriate content.

4. Teach Critical Thinking

• Ask an adult to help you understand what is real or fake online. For example, not everything they see on YouTube or games is true.
• Ask a trusted adult if something feels wrong or makes them uncomfortable.

5. Respectful Behaviour

• Be kind and respectful online just as you would for face-to-face interactions.
• Know that cyberbullying is harmful and that you should tell an adult if they or a friend are being bullied.

6. Communication

• If something goes wrong online, tell an adult.
• Report anything upsetting, like bullying or inappropriate content, without fear of getting in trouble.
