The Recovery Curriculum

Returning to school is vital for children’s education and for their well-being. Time out of school is detrimental for children’s cognitive and academic development, particularly for disadvantaged children. This impact can affect both current levels of learning and children’s future ability to learn, and therefore we need to ensure all pupils can return to school sooner rather than later.

Guidance for full opening: schools (DfE, 02 July 2020)

When pupils return to our school there will be a Recovery Curriculum in place which addresses not only the potential gaps in academic attainment but focuses on children's health and mental well-being, too. Research places emphasis on acknowledging the losses which they will have encountered during the COVID lockdown: loss of routine, structure, friendship, opportunity and freedom, which can trigger responses of anxiety, trauma and bereavement.

With this at the heart of our response, the Recovery Curriculum has been designed to address the following principles:

  • Mental health and well-being support
  • Personal, social, health and economic education through the JIGSAW scheme
  • Physical health education
  • Quality play provision through the OPAL play scheme
  • Assessment for recovery
  • A broad and balanced curriculum:
    • English
    • Maths
    • The International Primary Curriculum (IPC)
  • Early years provision
  • Supporting pupils with special educational needs and disabilities
  • Supporting our parents and community
  • Third sector collaboration
